Croatia is indeed unique country, not only for its crystal clear, blue sea, but also for a thousand years of different cultures that have replaced each other and sometimes assimilated in these areas.
Among 1,185 islands, solitary rocks and reefs, the largest islands are Krk and Cres; there are 50 inhabited islands.
Istria is the largest Croatian peninsula, unique and magnificent by itself.
Traces of first human life in Istria date back to the prehistoric times. The first known inhabitants in this parts were the Histri and that is how the peninsula got its name .Different populations and cultures, from Romantimes up to today, have left the traces of their cultures in the architecture, wall painting and in the rich church architecture.
Valuable monuments of religious and secular architecture have been preserved from all periods.
The climate is mild mediterranean with no snow in wintertime while summers are sunny and warm. The sea is good for swimming from May until the end of September.
The development of tourism in Istria dates back to the period of the Roman Empire. And that's the time (I century AD) that saw the construction of the Vespasianus' Amphitheatre in Pula that could hold up to 20 thousand spectators, of course for the amusement of citizens and also tourists.
Istria is becoming more and more famous today, for the development of nautical and congress tourism, excursions, hunting and fishing tourism, agrotourism, cultural and eno-gastronomic tourism, sport and recreational tourism, diving and ecologic tourism.
